"The Adaptive Use of Wall Niche at Ar-Rahmah Mosque"
Nestled in the heart of Kampung Seri Damansara, Section 17, Petaling Jaya, Masjid Ar-Rahmah boasts not only a place of worship but also an architectural feature that seamlessly integrates into the daily rituals of worshippers. The perimeter fencing, adorned with decorative wall niches, has unexpectedly evolved into functional shoeracks during Friday prayers, reflecting the adaptive nature of architecture in response to human behavior.
The perimeter fencing surrounding Masjid Ar-Rahmah stands as a testament to meticulous craftsmanship, featuring intricate patterns and motifs that adorn its surface. Amidst this decorative façade, a series of wall niches catch the eye, strategically placed along the fence line. Originally intended for ornamental purposes, these niches have organically transformed into practical shoeracks during Friday prayers.
From our simple observation, we believe there are four Reasons for the Usage During Friday Prayer:
1. Protection from Damage: Worshippers utilize the fence as a shoe rack to prevent their shoes from being stepped on or damaged after the prayer session concludes. This proactive measure ensures the preservation of their footwear, especially in crowded mosque environments.
2. Hygiene Concerns: With the mosque's designated shoe racks often reaching capacity during Friday prayers, worshippers opt to use the fence niches to avoid placing their shoes on the ground. This helps keep their footwear clean and free from dirt or debris, enhancing personal hygiene practices.
3. Convenience and Accessibility: Placing shoes within the wall niches offers worshippers a convenient and easily accessible storage solution. Unlike placing shoes on the ground, utilizing the fence as a shoe rack allows worshippers to locate their footwear swiftly once the prayer session concludes, saving time and minimizing confusion.
4. Visual Security: By storing their shoes within the wall niches, worshippers maintain visual contact with their belongings. This heightened awareness serves a dual purpose, providing security against potential theft while ensuring peace of mind during moments of spiritual reflection.
